This utility describes your public IP Address.

IP stands for Internet Protocol and it generally refers to an Internet Address. There are two commonly used IP versions: IP version 4, shortened as IPv4, and IP version 6 as IPv6.

In the case of IPv4, these addresses are represented by 4 bytes expressed from 0-255 and separated by a dot or period. An example of such an address could be 192.168.0.1 or 255.255.255.255 at the extreme. In the case of IPv6, these addresses are typically represented by eight groups of four hexadecimal numbers, and an example of these could be: 2002:0aa8:1234:abcd:ffff:a1b2:0210:a003d.

Public IP addresses are managed and assigned by a special entity named the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), a division of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN was established in the United States in 1998 to help maintain the security of the internet.
